JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

*** Sorry, we are no longer accepting applications for the 2010-11 season.

New Officials (Mentorship Program)

Each year the London Referees Group recruits new members for the upcoming season. The Mentoring Program Committee, chaired by Executive V.P. John Brochu, determines the number of officials required once the number of returning officials is determined.

All applicants must meet the minimum age requirement of 14 years old by December 31st, 2010. Deadline for applications is Sunday August 8, 2010.

Selection

Try outs will be held on Monday August 16th, 2010. Registration will be held from 6:00pm to 6:30pm at Western Fair. Attendance is mandatory to become a referee.

The in-class presentation (6:30pm - 7:30pm) provides an opportunity to understand the expectations and some of the procedures new officials will have to follow. The potential new official is provided an opportunity to ask questions during this session. LRG encourages parents of younger potential members to attend, as there is a time commitment and cost associated with getting started in officiating that they should be aware of. Parents are also provided an opportunity to ask questions during this session.

The on-ice session (8pm – 9pm) is used to determine the individuals officiating potential. All drills are designed to use basic skating moves that are used while officiating. These drills are done at an easy pace and not intended to see who is the fastest or best skater. The sessions are also used to review and introduce the individuals to basic positioning, signals, and conditioning.
CSA approved helmets are mandatory for the on-ice session.

Certification and Re-Certification Clinics

If the recruit is invited to become a member, arrangements must be made to attend a Certification clinic in London. Attendance is mandatory. Before any individual can participate as an official in a game they must have a certification number. It should be noted each year officials must attend a re-certification clinic to be eligible to officiate in that season.

Police Check

Beginning with the 2006-07 season all Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario (MHAO) 18 and older must have a Police background check completed and submitted to the MHAO office. All Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) and Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) officials must have a Police background check regardless of age.
